The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has reported that flight crew members of Air Peace’s Boeing 737-500 tested positive for alcohol and one cabin crew for cannabis following a runway overrun in Port Harcourt, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures.

On July 13, Air Peace flight APK7190, a scheduled Lagos-to-Port Harcourt service with 103 passengers and crew, landed 2,264 meters from Runway 21’s threshold at Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport after an unstabilized approach, halting 209 meters into the clearway. No injuries were reported, and all passengers disembarked safely, though the NSIB classified the event as a serious incident.

The bureau’s preliminary report, released Friday and signed by Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, revealed toxicological findings from Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Tests detected ethyl glucuronide, an alcohol biomarker, in the captain and first officer, indicating recent consumption, while one cabin crew member tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis.

These results are under evaluation for their impact on human performance and safety management, with further analysis pending in the final report. The NSIB issued immediate recommendations to Air Peace Limited, urging strengthened crew resource management training to address unstabilized approaches and go-around decisions, alongside stricter pre-flight fitness-for-duty checks.

The bureau stressed that these findings are preliminary, and comprehensive conclusions will follow in the final report to bolster Nigeria’s aviation safety standards. Air Peace has not publicly responded to the report.
